Program Educational Objectives and Student Outcomes

The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering offers the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) and the Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering (BSAE).

BSME Program Educational Objectives

Alumni of the BSME program should demonstrate the following traits or accomplishments within five years of graduation:

PEO 1

Graduates will achieve professional advancements or promotions with progressively higher levels of responsibility, competency, professional and ethical judgment and analysis. They will apply creative and innovative techniques to solve significant problems. They will apply team assimilation skills to successfully manage cross-disciplinary, collaborative projects that require global and multicultural perspectives.

PEO 2

Graduates will demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills in presenting, documenting and conveying their work via traditional and new media formats.  They will use these skills in creating and supporting new or improved designs, inventions, and intellectual property, thereby contributing to the social, economic and environmental well-being of local and global communities.

PEO 3

Graduates will demonstrate commitments to lifelong learning and continuous professional development through activities such as mentoring, participating in professional societies, completing advanced degrees and achieving professional registration or other certifications.

Mechanical Engineering BS graduates will accomplish these objectives in the course of professional employment, entrepreneurship, military or public service, and postgraduate education.

BSAE Program Educational Objectives

Alumni of the BSAE program should demonstrate the following traits or accomplishments within five years of graduation:

PEO 1

Graduates will possess a strong foundation in the principles of aerospace science, engineering, and technology, enabling them to achieve professional advancements and promotions while taking on increasing responsibilities. They will demonstrate technical expertise, ethical judgment, and analytical skills specific to aerospace engineering. Graduates will develop innovative problem-solving abilities to address complex challenges in designing, analyzing, and improving aircraft and spacecraft systems. Additionally, they will excel in team based collaboration, effectively managing multidisciplinary projects while emphasizing a global and multicultural perspective.

PEO 2

Graduates will demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills in presenting, documenting, and conveying their work across both traditional and emerging media formats. They will apply these skills while upholding ethical responsibilities and environmental awareness, contributing meaningfully to advancements in aerospace technology and exploration. In doing so, they will promote sustainable, safe, and innovative engineering practices, while also advancing the social, economic, and environmental well-being of local and global communities.

PEO 3

Graduates will demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and continuous professional development by engaging in activities such as mentoring, participating in aerospace-focused professional societies, pursuing advanced degrees, and attaining professional certifications specific to the aerospace industry.
