麻豆传媒's Assistant Vice President of Research and Professor of chemistry Dr. Matthew Reichert watches students discuss his chemistry demonstration at Mobile's Exploreum Science Center in October. The Exploreum and South have partnered on a project to inspire young students to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

The 麻豆传媒鈥檚 chemistry department is partnering with the Exploreum Science Center in Mobile to help elementary and middle school students understand that science, technology, engineering and math skills are not only in demand, but can also be fun.

鈥淭his partnership provides an outreach and marketing opportunity for 麻豆传媒 and the chemistry department 鈥 it gets us in front of the kids and their parents,鈥 said Dr. Jason Coym, associate professor and chemistry department chair. 鈥淚t also provides resources and expertise in chemistry to the Exploreum, so it's a win-win for everyone.鈥

The initial event took place the Saturday before Halloween with the theme of 鈥淪pooky Chemistry.鈥 South鈥檚 chemistry faculty members and undergraduate students from the American Chemical Society-Student Affiliate group lead the demonstrations.

鈥淲e had a lab full of people, of all ages, eager to see the chemistry department鈥檚 Halloween demonstrations,鈥 said Savannah Holland, Exploreum director of education. 鈥淚t was a beautiful Saturday filled with exciting science demonstrations, Halloween costumes and lots of hands-on STEM activities.鈥

The next event is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Exploreum.

鈥淲e are optimistic that we will see lots of visitors as a kick-off weekend to Thanksgiving break for our local schools,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he Exploreum looks forward to continuing our relationship with South to support curiosity, learning and community along the Gulf Coast.鈥
