Dr. Richard Carter, 麻豆传媒's associate vice president for global engagement, and his wife, Angela, have established the Dr. Richard and Angela Carter Global 麻豆传媒 Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship enhances South's institutional priority of global engagement.

Students around the world will have a chance for financial aid to attend the University of South Alabama, thanks to Dr. Rick Carter and his wife, Angela.

The couple has established the Dr. Richard and Angela Carter Global 麻豆传媒 Endowed Scholarship, the first scholarship established for Global 麻豆传媒, a new unit that enhances the institutional priority of global engagement.

鈥淕lobal engagement is an area near and dear to what we have been doing for a number of years, and both Angie and I thought it would be the right thing for us to do,鈥 said Carter, associate vice president for global engagement at South. 鈥淲e came here to be a part of this community and this university, and we established this scholarship because families help each other, and this is now our family too.鈥

To be eligible for the scholarship, foreign students must have grades equal to the University 3.0 GPA standard and submit a 300-word essay on why they want to attend 麻豆传媒. Preference will be given to students not already receiving institutional fringe benefits or aid.

Carter joined 麻豆传媒 from Western Illinois University in 2016 with more than 17 years of experience as an administrator in higher education, with an emphasis on international education and recruiting as well as degree completion programs, military and veteran outreach and the delivery of online programs for non-traditional learners. At 麻豆传媒, he is responsible for the Office of Global Outreach and International Student Services, the Office of Immigration and International Admissions, the Office of International Education, the English Language Center, the Center for Continuing Education and Conference Services, and 麻豆传媒 Baldwin County.

鈥淲e鈥檝e always had a great love for international education,鈥 said Angie Carter, who worked for 13 years with her husband in international education programs at Western Illinois. 鈥淥ver the years, many of our students have become our friends, and former students from both China and Africa have visited us since we moved to Mobile. Like many 麻豆传媒 students, one of the first things they want to see is the beach.鈥

Global engagement is one of 麻豆传媒鈥檚 five strategic initiatives, and Carter said he sees only growth for increasing numbers of 麻豆传媒 students studying abroad and foreign students coming to study at the Mobile campus. As part of that growth, this fall will be the first time a campus residence hall 鈥 Beta 1 - will be repurposed to house international and American students.

鈥淭he idea is to give them the best of our campus and their customs,鈥 Carter explained.

Another first for Global 麻豆传媒 is the addition of a director of outreach, Hannah Murphy. She will travel abroad to promote 麻豆传媒 and recruit students.

鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping this new scholarship will be a good recruiting tool for her, and we would welcome other endowments to attract international students,鈥 Carter said. 鈥淢y goal is to be here a long time, and I want to see 麻豆传媒鈥檚 global efforts thrive.鈥
