Biography

Rachel Wright received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. She has traveled overseas and considers these experiences to be as much a part of her education as her time in school.

Rachel has exhibited in New York, Chicago, New Orleans, Mobile, Pensacola, Birmingham. Charleston, and Panama City, FL. She has work in a number of collections, including the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum, and received an Artist Fellowship from the Alabama State Council for the Arts. . Her work is primarily sculptural, mixing media such as glass, clay, steel, wood, wax, fabric, & photographs. She is married to ceramic artist Tony Wright, and the two live happily on the gulf coast in Mobile, where they both teach at the Â鶹´«Ã½.

Never satisfied with sticking to just one material, Rachel Wright has spent her artistic career making work out of ceramics, wax, metal, fabric, and found objects. After receiving her MFA in glass from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, she took a 10 year hiatus from glass, and worked primarily with fabric. A newly built glass studio at the Â鶹´«Ã½ (where Rachel happened to be teaching) drew her back into the seductive material, and now she happily spends most of her spare time there. For the past five years, she has been blowing glass, making fused/slumped and cast glass work, and teaching kiln formed glass at the University and the Mobile Museum of Art.
